What are mandalas?
The word “mandala” means “circle.” Mandalas symbolize harmony and balance, and they often feature repeating patterns and different symbols and geometric shapes. They originate from India and are sacred symbols used in meditation and rituals in Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Mandalas can be found in other religions as well, for example, Christianity (Celtic crosses and rose windows).
Nowadays mandala designs have become people’s go-tos when looking for something to color!
Drawing and coloring mandalas is not just fun; it is also very relaxing and a great way to unleash your creativity. These mandala coloring pages might just help you find your next favorite hobby: coloring! (And hoarding art supplies…)
The benefits of mandala coloring pages
Many people might see coloring as a fun activity only for kids. But in recent years, coloring has become a very popular hobby among adults. Especially mandala coloring pages are in high demand! But why mandalas?
- Helps with relaxation, promotes mindfulness, and relieves stress and anxiety – Coloring simple and repetitive designs is a calming activity. Immersing yourself in the world of coloring is a wonderful way to take your mind off all the stressful things in your life, at least for a moment. If you have been looking for a healthy and fun way to improve your focus and help your body relax, then you might want to give mandala coloring pages a try!
- Creative expression – Coloring mandalas is a great way to express and practice your creativity! Let your creativity flow when choosing color schemes and testing new techniques and art mediums. Coloring is supposed to be fun, so don’t worry about perfection!
- Accessibility – One of the wonderful things about coloring pages is that you don’t have to know how to draw to create something beautiful! You also don’t have to stress about picking the right colors. There are tons of color palettes online—simply pick your favorite and start coloring!
- Inspiration – Your own finished pages can inspire you to try the same or a completely different color scheme on another coloring page. Artists often find inspiration for their art from other artists. Similarly, you can also inspire other colorists by sharing your finished mandala coloring pages on social media!

How to start coloring
Digital coloring
If you prefer to color digitally, then lucky you—no need to worry about printers or pencils!
Clip Studio Paint and Procreate are excellent choices for digital coloring. Krita and MediBang Paint are popular free painting programs that will get the job done perfectly as well!
I’m pretty sure none of those programs can open PDFs though, so you’ll have to find a way to convert the coloring pages to JPG or PNG. If you have GIMP (free) or Photoshop, you can open the files there and then save them as JPG or PNG. Canva also has a free PDF to JPG converter you might want to look into.
And if nothing else works, there is always the print screen option!
Printable coloring pages and art supplies
The amazing thing about printable coloring pages is that you can print them as many times as you want, and most importantly, you get to choose the paper they are printed on! This gives us more options when we select our coloring supplies.
Colored pencils
Colored pencils are probably the most popular choice for coloring pages. You don’t have to buy the most expensive pencils either; just grab a small or cheap set and start with that. You can save up and upgrade your collection later.
Brands such as Staedtler, Crayola, and Arteza have affordable colored pencils that are great for beginners.
If you are ready to spend a lot of money for very good colored pencils, then I recommend:
- Lyra – Rembrandt Polycolor
- Faber-Castell – Polychromos
- Caran d’Ache – Luminance
- Derwent – Chromaflow
- Derwent – Lightfast
Note that these five colored pencils that I listed above can be bought open stock as well. You can buy a few of your favorite colors and see which pencils you prefer!
Alcohol markers
A very popular medium as well, especially for the bold and easy coloring pages. Good markers make blending the vibrant colors effortless. It is also a faster medium compared to colored pencils, so you will finish your backgrounds in no time!
One huge downside to markers is the price, unfortunately. They can be extremely pricey!
Copic Markers
You’ve probably heard of Copics before. They are super expensive but also very popular because of their quality. I have tried Copics before, and I must admit… they really live up to the hype!
Promarkers
These markers are a little bit cheaper than Copics. They color and blend beautifully!
Ohuhu Markers
There must be cheaper options, right? I have been eyeing Ohuhu markers for a long time. They became the perfect alternative to Copics due to their good quality and cheaper price. I have yet to get my hands on them, however…
Shuttle Art Markers
I came across these affordable markers, and people seem to like them. Maybe something you can look into if you want to give markers a try!
Gel pens
Gel pens are a very popular option for mandala coloring pages. I recently bought Sakura Gelly Roll pens, and I love them, especially the glitter ones!
Some more affordable gel pens you can check out are Aen Art gel pens and Soucolor gel pens.
Have you ever tried to print coloring pages on dark paper? Some gel pens look very vibrant and gorgeous on darker papers.
Felt-tip pens
Another great option for coloring mandala coloring pages. I used Stabilo‘s pens when I was younger, and they were very popular.
Many brands I have already mentioned also sell felt-tip pens: Staedtler, Crayola, Lyra, Faber-Castell, and Caran d’Ache.
